3D Animations for UNDERDOGS VR project

Project overview

World of Tanks Blitz is a fast‑paced mobile and PC action MMO where seasonal events, operations, and limited‑time modes are a core driver of player engagement and revenue. Wargaming needed a consistent stream of high‑impact key visuals to promote these events across in‑game banners, storefronts, social media, and UA campaigns.

Goals and challenges

• Convey a believable sense of mass, inertia, and impact for 5‑ton war machines while keeping motion clear and readable from a first‑person VR cockpit.

• Design distinctive movement and combat behavior for multiple enemy archetypes so players can instantly read threats and react in time.

• Build an animation system that supports physics‑based interactions, knockbacks, and procedural reactions without breaking rigs or causing motion sickness.

Our approach

• Animation direction: Defined movement language for each mech type (agile, brute, ranged, boss) including idle stance, locomotion, attacks, hit‑reactions, and death states, using real‑world references for weight and timing.

• 3ds Max production: Created keyframed animations on custom rigs in 3ds Max, focusing on believable arcs, joint limits, and secondary motion in hydraulics, cables, and armor plates to sell the feeling of heavy machinery.

• Gameplay integration: Delivered animation clips optimized for the game engine, collaborating with designers to sync timings with damage windows, haptics, and physics forces so each hit felt impactful in VR.

Provided a cohesive animation set that strengthened the game’s core fantasy of piloting a massive mech, contributing to UNDERDOGS’ reception as a standout VR brawler on major platforms.​​

Enabled the team to iterate faster on enemy design and difficulty tuning since animations were structured, documented, and easy to expand with new attacks and variants.​
